Rio De Janerio Becomes First South American City To Host Olympic Games

February 6th, 2010

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite–including President Barak Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey–Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan. Despite some media attention to the betting odds, bookmakers reported that they didn’t receive a lot of action on the event.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points;

“It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country.”

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath. For the time being, however, the mood in Rio was one of celebration with over 50,000 residents dancing and partying in the streets.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The’96 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal. Some suggested that US President Obama’s quick and perfunctory visit was taken as more of an insult by the delegates than anything else.

Why Choose Zodiac Tattoos

January 26th, 2010

One out of every 10 individuals in America are said to have at least a single tattoo on their body. Previously a practice that has been frowned upon and has been stereotyped as unhygienic and rebellious, tattooing is now gaining a wide acceptance in the whole world. No longer are tattoos viewed in a negative light, but are rather seen as a means of self-expression and creativity.

Thus, from the oldest to the youngest, whether a corporate individual or a free-spirited biker, one would sure have a tattoo or at least plan to have one. Apparently, the practice of tattooing has already crossed boundaries.

Tattoos come in all shapes and sizes. The most common are dragons, koi fishes, Japanese and Chinese characters, and of course, roses. In choosing a tattoo design, careful consideration must take place for this becomes part of your life in more ways than one. After all, you wear the tattoo not like a simple accessory which you can take on or off at will. Rather, it will be with you for the rest of your life. In fact, removing a tattoo is a very painful and expensive process.

Thus, before one finally decides to have one, careful planning and decision is required. Because most individuals want to wear something that represents them, a perfect choice of tattoo design would be a zodiac tattoo. All individuals have a zodiac sign which reveals something about their personality, their tastes, characteristics and preferences. Interestingly, few people think of getting a tattoo of their zodiac sign. For one thing, you are born with a zodiac sign and you cannot erase that fact. So a tattoo with your zodiac sign is one fact that you can always have with you forever. Then it becomes an interesting start of any conversation. You can actually make more friends with your zodiac tattoo.

Each individual has a corresponding zodiac sign depending on the month that they were born. Accordingly, there are 12 zodiac signs for each month: Aries, Gemini, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

However, one need not worry that ones tattoo would turn out to be exactly the same as another person who was born on the same month. You can actually ensure that the tattoos are done in a unique and special way to match the client’s preference and taste. Thus, no two tattoos would turn out to be exactly the same.

Zodiac tattoos could be customized for the client himself or herself. You can choose from a photo gallery that presents an array of pleasing designs. Thus, the procedure usually involves choosing an initial design from a wide variety of designs available. For instance, if one wants a Leo tattoo, there would be a wide variety of images to choose from. One could therefore either choose among the designs available or choose a design and then have it customized according to one’s taste.

One could view the different designs available from their photo gallery which would eventually help an individual decide on what tattoo he or she would like to have.

An additional feature at http://www.zodiac-tatoos.com/ is that they provide resources for individuals such as horoscopes as well as additional information regarding their zodiac sign. Zodiac tattoos are the perfect choice to have on one’s body as a means of self-expression and creativity.

The History Of Reno’s Mapes Hotel

January 12th, 2010

On a cold, gray morning in late January 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community and nationally to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts.

While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The opening of the Mapes in’47 ushered in a new era in casino gambling, and changed the economy and way of life in Nevada forever. The Mapes was actually the first property in the country to combine a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of ‘The Misfits’. Joseph McCarthy, America’s famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn’t have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Sinatra, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes prospered during the 60’s and 70’s. The hotel finally closed in’82, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.

Reno has yet to experience the sort of growth that has been seen in Southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands–perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state–is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land–which sits along the banks of the Truckee River–to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn’t approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.

Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, isn’t the sort of game changing improvement suggested by the City Redevelopment Agency and their adamant insistence that the building be demolished. To the contrary, it appears they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was ‘haunted’ and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark that played a significant part in the economic growth of the entire state.

The Arena Football League Calls It Quits

January 12th, 2010

After canceling their 2009 season, the Arena Football League has shut down entirely and appears headed for bankruptcy. Earlier this week, the league office released a short statement indicated that it had ceased operations because owners were “unable to reach any consensus on restructuring the league over the past eight months.” The leagues statement continued that there are no other viable options available to the league right now.”

Even before the decision was made to cancel the 2009 season this past December, it had been a tumultuous off-season for the Arena Football League. It began with the resignation of long time AFL commissioner David Baker just two days before the Arena Bowl championship game. Though Baker put a positive spin on his resignation saying that he felt it was time, it didn’t exactly send a positive message about the future viability of the league.

In October, the owner of the New Orleans VooDoo announced that the team would cease operations”despite being one of the league leaders in attendance. In announcing that the team would fold, owner Tom Benson (who also owns the NFL Saints) suggested that the end of the five year old franchise was in no way an indictment of the New Orleans market. Instead, he cryptically explained that it was due to circumstances currently affecting the league and the team.”

With a dispersal draft planned to reassign the VooDoo personnel, uncertainty began to reign over the leagues future. The dispersal draft was scheduled and postponed several times amid assurances from the AFL office that rumors of financial instability were unfounded. The most recent announcement finally put all of the speculation to rest.

The inability to get any consensus on a business model for the league reportedly served as the final nail in the AFLs coffin. A major problem was skyrocketing player salaries, and some sort of compensation system tied to team revenues was a necessity. A bigger schism was left between several factions of owners”primarily drawn along lines of overall wealth.

Despite the demise of the Arena Football League, it wont be the end of the road for the twenty two year old sport. The 50 yard indoor war lives on in the AF2 league which, ironically, was originally started as something of a developmental organization for the AFL. The league plays in smaller markets and has a more realistic salary structure. A number of current AFL players”and possibly a couple of AFL franchises”could end up in AF2.

How to Use Airsoft Guns

December 30th, 2009

There is more than what you can expect in the spectrum of competed airsoft guns. To introduce you to airsoft weapons, it can be said that these are ideal products to help you get the real life feel of any armed combat but in a safe way. These guns are designed with minuscule details of real life along with efficient features that provide the realistic sense. Such airsoft guns are widely used in activities airsoft tournaments, shooting practice etc. To whet your interest, these guns are avail be in a wide array of attractive designs are interesting features. However, there are three basic types of airsoft guns explained in this article.

Spring powered airsoft gun:

Spring powered metal airsoft guns are one of the traditional types of airsoft weapons used on the field. In these types of arms there is a spring installed internally. While you use these types of arms you may have to cock the gun every time before you fire a shot. This means that you need to reload your gun every time you take a shot. Spring powered gun are generally reloaded by pulling backward its bolt or slide in airsoft rifle or gun respectively. When you do this the internal spring becomes compressed enough to exert elastic potential energy when you trigger the gun. When you take shot after this the projectile is thrown in tremendous force towards the target.

Electric airsoft gun:

Electric airsoft gun is the traditional name for AEG or Automated Electric Guns. These replicas are built with advanced technology to offer convenience to the player while they enjoy the recreational activity on the field. These guns eliminate the need of manually reloading the gun every time, before you take a shot. These guns are installed with electric batteries and electric motor which automatically cocks the projectiles allowing you to shoot the target at considerable rate of shots per minute. These guns are preferred over spring powered guns as they make it easy and fast to fire the target and also increase the odds of winning. It should be understood that as these machines are more convenient and enjoys advanced features compared to traditional spring powered guns, they are evidently costlier than the latter.

Gas powered airsoft guns:

Gas powered airsoft guns are designed with techniques based on gas. These gun use gas such as propane, co2 gas etc. Unlike spring powered gun you don’t have to cock the projectile every time you fire. These guns are installed with chambers consisting of pressurized gas in the form of liquid. These gas is passed into a firing chamber where it extensively expands resulting in propulsion of projectiles. It should be known that a blowback gun is usually costlier than any conventional gas based airsoft gun. In this type of guns the pressure of the gas makes the slide of the gun depict a backward jerk. The blowback gun is highly preferred as the backward jerk of the gun at every shot makes it look more realistic. While using these guns you do not have to really reload the gun every time, as the mechanism automatically prepares the gun for the next shot.

Future Book Betting Traps And How To Avoid Them

December 29th, 2009

Sports betting futures wagers can be an entertaining and profitable investment, but there are a number of pitfalls. These are some things to avoid:

Search for the best price: A common mistake is to assume that the price on a specific futures wager position will be the same at every sportsbook. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, you’ll often see a greater degree of difference between futures prices from book to book than any other form of bet. This is because that books aren’t as worried about what price other outfits are offering as they are about keeping their own financial position balanced.

Don’t fixate on picking the winner from a competitive field: This may sound like strange advice, but from a theoretical standpoint it makes perfect sense. As with every other element of sport wagering its crucial to always focus not on winners and losers, but on the value you’re getting on individual bets. For example, in most years there are several teams with a realistic shot of winning at the start of the NCAA basketball tournament. The problem is that these top teams invariably offer low paybacks that are less than their ‘true odds’ of winning. Every team is subject to the same variables like injuries, slumps, bad matchups but backing teams that are ‘under the radar’ at higher prices offer more compensation for these ‘risks’.

To put this in more theoretical terms, the “true odds” of Duke winning the NCAA Championship are almost certainly higher than the price we’re getting. Obviously, determining the “true odds”, or actual probability of a future event is an inexact science but think of it this way: if the NCAA tournament was played 100 times would Duke wind up winning 50 of those? Given the number of other good teams and the propensity for upsets along the way, its doubtful. For the sake of argument, lets say that Duke has a 33% chance to win the tournament. That means that I wouldn’t consider a bet on Duke to be a good value unless I was getting a price that a) accurately reflected the true probability of their winning and b) gave me some compensation for assuming the “risk of the unknown” inherent in taking the position so far in advance. At +500 I might be interested, but at +200 the value just isn’t there.

Note that the more competitive the market, the more difficult it is to find good value on a favorite. In a smaller field, or in a field with one dominant competitor it can be easier. For example, say the UFC were to have a tournament involving heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and three male figure skaters. Even if Lesnar was slightly injured, or not at the top of his game he’d essentially have a 100% chance of beating the smaller, effeminate men who are untrained to fight. If a book installed Lesnar as a -1000 favorite in this spot, it could still be considered a good value. It’s never easy to risk a lot to win a little, but from strictly a mathematical standpoint it makes sense.

Don’t go for the big killing: Sports wagering is not a good arena in which to make a ‘big killing’. It may happen from time to time, but it is extremely rare. A perennial doormat can come out of nowhere to win a championship at a big price, but the fact that it happens from time to time doesn’t make it a good value. If you’re a recreational player and want to throw a few dollars at a big long shot, no real harm. If you aspire to any degree of seriousness as a sports better, however, you need to maintain your discipline and commitment to value at all times. If you want to hit a big jackpot play the lottery or the slot machines, but don’t try to do it in a sports betting paradigm.

Wagering value is just as important at the bottom of the barrel as it is at the top. Just because you’re getting a huge potential payback on a big dog doesn’t make it a good value. Make sure that the payback you’re getting presents an overlay situation–even on a huge underdog.

Don’t waste your money on ridiculous prop bets: Occasionally sports books offer ridiculous bets to get press or to be funny. For example, a book once offered odds on Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher and Bruce Willis all hopping into bed together and releasing a video tape of the proceedings. You’d no doubt get a huge payback were this to happen, but the ‘true odds’ of such an event transpiring far exceeded even a big potential payback.

Appreciate When Kids Play Kitchens And Enhance Their Creativity

December 3rd, 2009

Turn your children’s rooms into kid play kitchens so they can really be themselves. Check for the best choices in making your child’s room come alive with bright color, creativity and originality. It does not matter what gender the child has as long as the set up is fun for the little one. This is an educational environment for the child where responsibility and recognition of real life roles are being nurtured.

Let them enjoy the environment so they can appreciate the beauty of nature. It will also give them more space to set up tables and chairs and create a make-believe world of having a restaurant and serving a customer. You can do this if the room is not spacious enough for the kids play kitchens. You can turn your idle backyard into an interesting place with these stuffs. It is alright if children get soiled especially the girls for that is part of the learning process.

What is important is there is an adult who can guide and supervise them. This is one way of grooming the little ones for being responsible persons as they grow. With the kids play kitchens, children learn how to set the table and you can guide them with the proper table setting. They will also learn how to clean up their utensils and their kitchen apparatus like the stove and the oven.

The love for work, virtue of patience and obedience must be instilled in their minds. When they are preparing food and setting the table that is already work and that can be really useful in the near future. Serving food on the table for a make-believe diner or customer is inculcating the virtue of patience and this is something they must live up with. You have taught them the importance of obedience when you teach them how to clean up their mess and they wash the utensil, dishes and other things they have used.

Children are great imitators and they follow what you do. They learn by examples so you must be ready to give them some good ones. It is necessary to arouse their interest in order to develop their cognitive skills and their awareness of the facts of life. Parent and child bond can be strengthened with these types of games. Children are enjoying what they are doing as they like to do what you do as when these kids play kitchens.

You may want to purchase kids pretend kitchens for your kids. This creates a type of bonding between parent and child. This is because they can learn new things especially how adults prepare food in their pretend kitchens. Kids love to imitate their parents.

UFC 85 Flashback: Alves Defeats Hughes In Lopsided Main Event

December 3rd, 2009

A day after failing to make weight for his fight against Matt Hughes, Thiago Alves dominated the former UFC welterweight champion en route to a 2nd round TKO victory. The main event at UFC 85 in London was somewhat anticlimactic to the fans at the O2 Arena who considered the semifinal matchup between Manchesters Michael Bisping and Jason Day the biggest fight on the card.

Hughes didnt make any excuses following his one sided loss, saying simply that hes a good fighter and he got me. The longtime king of the UFCs welterweight division also gave notice that his career as an active fighter was drawing to a close, suggesting that he had one fight left and challenging Matt Serra in what presumably would be his retirement match. Hughes had no answer for Alves from the opening horn, as he was stuffed on several takedown attempts early on. When he did finally get his opponent to the ground he was unable to do much damage. Alves, conversely, scored effectively with his striking including several damaging knee strikes. He also did considerable work on the ground, with an elbow strike opening up a large cut on Hughes forehead.

The end came early in the 2nd round as Hughes was caught coming in by a devastating knee strike. He fell to the canvas in a heap and referee Herb Dean was jumping in to stop the contest before Alves could follow up with any punches. As the ringside physician entered the ring to check on the fallen fighter, Hughes gave an indication that his knee was injured.

Michael Bisping simply overwhelmed Jason Day en route to a lopsided TKO victory. Bisping built upon the improved boxing skills he demonstrated at UFC 83 by unveiling an impressive ground and pound attack. Day never really got anything going and by the last minute of the fight was simply trying to cover up to prevent damage from Bispings elbows and hammer fists. Between his move down to the middleweight division and his improved technical striking skills, Bisping looks like a different fighter. His post UFC 83 suggestion that he wanted a fight with Anderson Silva seemed premature at the time, but following another devastating performance its starting to look much more realistic.

In other action, Mike Swick used an array of high kicks and a 7 reach advantage to coast to a unanimous decision over Marcus Davis. Davis, a former professional boxer, was unable to get inside against his lanky opponent and was never really in the fight. Like Bisping, Swick may have made an excellent career choice by moving down in weight. His height and reach, combined with a well rounded striking game, makes him a particularly different matchup at the lower weight.

A controversial point deduction for a strike to the back of the head cost Nate Marquardt his match against Thales Leites. Marquardt was solidly in charge for the entire fight, but suffered a point deduction for an illegal knee strike in round one. While that infraction was valid, replays of the 2nd round deduction for the strike to the back of the head gave the impression that he was penalized for a legal strike to the side of the head. The 2 point deduction changed the outcome of the fight, with Leites winning a split decision by the scores of 28-27, 28-27, 27-28. Marquardt was obviously disappointed in the outcome, but to his credit handled the loss with class despite the questionable nature of the outcome.

In the opening PPV match, another controversial ending saw Fabrico Werdum defeat Brandon Vera by 1st round KO. The fight had been evenly contested up until the stoppage, with Werdum scoring a couple of takedown and Vera countering with some effective punching. Late in the first round, Werdum got a full mount and began to fire a series of punches. Vera was clearly defending himself and didnt appear to be hurt at all when the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

Be Educated When Shopping For Barstools

November 15th, 2009

A really hot piece of furniture is the Barstool. This is due to the fact that they just adds something nice to your interior design as well as provides a nice relaxed seating option for many different occasions. Modern Bar stools come in a huge variety of designs, to suit rooms of any theme and some are even made for outdoor use. From traditional wooden counter stools for rustic country kitchens, to contemporary metal Bar stools complete with swivel seats, ideal for a home bar or games room, there’s a Barstool design to suit all tastes.

If you like to have your friends over for social drinks, then there is nothing better than Bar stools to provide a nice relaxing environment just for this purpose. You have the options of selecting from stools that have full backs with armrests or stools that have no backs and either a padded seat or a solid seat. Upholstered Barstools can be covered with hard wearing fabric in your choice of colors and patterns, to compliment your existing decor and other furniture. Vinyl and leather Barstools are other hot options to consider.

For a different option, you might like a stool that comes with a cushion that is detachable, and is secured with tie downs. This gives you the advantage of being able to change the covers for cleaning or if you fancy a change of look, and can be useful if your stools get lots of use.

When you are in the decision stage of buying a Barstool, you need to make sure that you take an accurate measurement of the space that you have available so that you get the right height for a comfortable fit. If your stools are not right you could end up with a confined area that does not allow for a convenient access to the counter top and an uncomfortable sitting situation. A good number to shoot for is to have around 9 or 10 inches between the counter and the seat of the stool. Take into consideration the spacing of the stools as well. You want to make sure that each person has plenty of room to move about freely without bothering the person next to them.Swivel Barstools that are made for commercial use can be a great addition to your home as they are great for their space saving features.

Online stores are super places to browse a huge range of different Barstools and compare prices, making it easier for you to find the perfect Barstools to transform your home.

It can be difficult at times knowing where to start your search online for 24 inch bar stools for sale, and this is why I have provided and excellent resource to guide you in finding the right shops online to start. Visit http://barstoolsforsale.net to find out more.

November 12th, 2009

This fall Twilight themed parties will be all the rage. There will be several people who will look forward to having birthday parties, costume parties, and other events based on the popular book series. The idea is not new. As a matter of fact when the series first came out, Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight, sponsored a series of Twilight proms. So it isn’t a huge leap to have a party based on the same theme. Since the idea is looking to be so popular it seems that one of the few ways to make your own even stand out is with unique favors. This is a great opportunity to make a lasting on guests who are fellow fans. The key to find great Twilight themed party favor is to know what you are looking for and to pay attention to detail. Look to movie merchandise for inspiration. There are plenty of posters and other items that are being sold by the movie franchise to pad sales from movie tickets. For you as a party planner this is a great opportunity to score some Twilight swag for your event. So you can take advantage of the extra details provided in the book to prove how much of a fan you are and create a lot of unique gifts. A great idea is to use Native American themed items as gifts since Jacob the new leading man for New Moon is from a Reservation and his tribes special powers are explained in legends. This is one way to take advantage of knowledge from the book.

Look to the images on the covers of the Twilight books for favor ideas. Each book in the Twilight series has a unique cover centered on a certain item or theme. The first book, Twilight has a cover with an apple in a woman’s hands. You can choose favors that have pictures of the cover or favors with apple themes such as an apple shaped candle. The detail will be a great way to show off your Twilight knowledge to fans.

Try to pick out favors that are at least somewhat useful so that they are not just pieces of junk that your guests throw away.
