Hiring Trends In The Fashion Industry

January 26th, 2010

Networking

If you look into the fashion industry you will find that there are many people who dreamed of working over there and there are many people who stumbled into that position by chance. One associate designer said that if you want to get it into the creative end of the industry, you need a proper education. You need to study design for this. Technical people like buyers and inventory planners on the other hand are more likely to have fallen into their jobs. No matter how they got there, however fashion professional admits having industry contacts is much more important than having talent. “To find a job,” reveals an employee from federated, “it’s very important to use the people you know. He said that he found his first job through contacts, the next he got by sending an exploratory note and third was his luck– I got it out from a newspaper advertisement. I’d say my first job was the easiest to find.

While many people — and fashion students in particular — might feel dismayed by this need to know the “right people,” one insider says worry is unnecessary. Students always think that they cannot make connection when they cannot make connection when they are in the college, says a career counselors from a top university from a top New York fashion school. This is totally a myth actually. Connection is al just another word for relationships. Because you have relationships with other students, professors, career counselors, the school administration and many others. At fashion school many teachers have their relationships with previous experience in the fashion industry. An acquaintance at your school or workplace might prove to be a good source of information. To find a right kind of job search for you it is important to discuss your job search with the people you know — and with the people they know. Inquire about the openings and request informational interviews. It is good if the fashion students will attend as many college-sponsored events as possible and seek relevant internships. After a fashion internship has ended, they should keep in touch with their managers. A fashion career counselor confirms, “Those who serve as intern advisors often grow very fond of their interns. They want to know that you’ve graduated; they want to help and advise you.”

Internships

Most fashion industry are in design, marketing, and production – and unpaid. If we talk about the entertainment industry actual education isn’t important as work experience. If you want that your resume or connection will get you further then you need some education to get in the door. If you want to go into this line then at least get an internship or even a part time job in sales or merchandising to get started. Each experience on your resume will help you better to get a job further. Although many job searches are posted on publication section and many internships searches are self directed because many are never publicized. If the position is at a popular company or designer, the internship will never be posted since everyone will want it on his or her resume.

Make sure to express your urge to learn and help the company if you may not have a responsible profile in the organization. Once you are in the company you can easily find out the other openings in the company even if they may not have opened yet. Build your resume so that you can get the interviews and introductions. Even if you’re current job in fashion industry may not pay you well. There are several options here — you work to get the experience or to learn enough to start your own business. If you are thinking of the latter, take any experience you can. It will pay off later.

Take initiative

Many different fashion position require different skills, most insiders agree that the industry overall calls for initiative, patience and a strong degree of independence. One insider adds that it’s great to have a boss who can push you for your work and can mentor you. Despite the glamour, prestige and a job satisfaction, insiders have their gripes. It’s too competitive – both within the industry and the office, says one informant. “People are sometimes unethical. For example, they might give you a commitment, but then drop the ball. Sometimes, clients cancel orders and I end up losing thousands of dollars — in one day.” Fashion insiders toil long, strenuous hours. “It’s a huge time commitment,” offers another contact in buying. “I often start early and stay late — and I also travel a good part of the time. You lose perspective after so many hours.” A different buyer adds, ” I often spend 12 hours at work and eat lunch at my desk. Burnout. There’s a lot of burnout.”

Getting the job, acing the interview

There are two school of thought in regard to moving up the fashion ranks. Some insiders said that if you want to see yourself high it is necessary to switch companies. According to one knowing source Many companies have non mobile positions where employees are pegged in their certain roles. In other words if you are an assistant of the company everyone will perceive you as an assistant only. If you want to increase your ranks, you have to be hard worker, know the right people or lie on your resume, says one informant. I was a hard worker and I had a great boss who served as my mentor. By staying right where I was, I ended up moving up into key roles.”

Once the job interview has been arranged for the company candidate should do the extensive research.

Once the job interview has been arranged for you it is good if you do the extensive research on the company. Examine the company literature and read the company web site. Browse through a periodical guide for the most recent articles on company developments. If you don’t know how to find information it is good if you ask with some other person. It is good if you extract all the information with the employer, you must know exactly how they work and what they do. ” Last, and perhaps most importantly, go shop the brand or retailer. You should know this thing that what type of product company currently sells and carries. Also research the companies biggest competitors. Because it is good to have the general knowledge of the competitors. Insiders recommend brushing up on your mental database of trendsetter: Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Alexander McQueen and Ralph Lauren, among others.

Always establish a rapport in front of the person who is interviewing you. You cant be bump on a log answering question, even if you have a great resume and portfolio. Your resume is also about fit so let your personality also show through. She also continues that it is not good if you ask about the salary on the first round of the interview. It is good if you ask intelligent question about the company, position and even the interviewer experience. Even if you lack experience in a particular area, an employer may hire you if he or she thinks you are quick and willing to learn.

The persons working as professionals recommend precautions observation about the clothes you are going to wear for the D-day. Definitely, employers are going to notice what the person coming for an interview to them is wearing and how. As some wise person had quoted “Your first impression is the last impression.” With the same logic, one theatrical designer has advocated the careful observation about your clothes. Though, it is agreeable that this situation is not a universal truth but even then it’s always advisable to dress well. Another insider quoted ” Nothing out of the norms, unless you are aspiring to be a fashion designer and the organization conduction interview is looking for out of the league and futuristic looks.” Good Tip – Be overdressed rather than under dressed.

Facing The Job Loss Challenge

January 21st, 2010

Many questions on the Interviewing message board have shown some of our readers’ problem in getting a search after leaving or losing a job. But according to me it may be useful for us to start a job at the beginning.

One thing is very clear about the work culture of the new millennium is that nearly all work is now short term, frequently even careers themselves. You have to prepare for change whether it suits your style or not. If we mention the current statistics so we can see that almost all say that the average job is only about three to four years now, but if we talk about 15 years ago when the average tenure of the job was 10 years.

It will be better if you understand that there will be an emotional roller coaster, most severely during the first few days. This ride will include lots of depression, apathy, denial, anger and then some more anger. One degree or another degree everyone goes through this stage. And I just don’t understand that why people don’t believe in this thing.

Don’t start directly calling to everyone you know and start sending out resume, answering ads, and calling recruiters. Most of the times chances are like that you are not really prepare to immediately start a search after a separation. It is not good to do a job search “on the rebound”. Because you will say the things that you will wish you hadn’t. It’s always good to share your true feelings about the situation with only a few people- maybe a significant other and/or a friend would be quite enough. You don’t want everyone to avoid you (”Uh oh, here comes the whiner…”). Now’s the time to adopt the marketing stance that your career – no matter how you perceive the reality – has been sunshine, light, and success. And you want everyone to know about those successes.

Networking is not calling to everyone you know. Networking is indirect relationship building, quite a different thing.

Develop a target. Years ago, in my private practice, I was deluged with people announcing, “I want to be in TV.” I never knew what does that meant…. did it mean television repair? Developing a target is the centerpiece of beginning your search. What is the job function- specifically? What is the desired culture? Geographic location? Size of organization? Do you want to start your own business? Consult? Do you have Dot-com-Virus? This may all involve some extensive self-assessment, with or without outside assistance – but it’s necessary.

And then, of course, you need to research your target

It is good to stick on the marketing plans which you have created. Work the system; there are no shortcuts, except for the occasional bolt of lightning. Discipline and consistency this two things account for a lot in this process.

It is good to be flexible. If you’re really listening while developing those relationships, your target might shift and adjust.

If you are loosing a job or leaving a job it doesn’t mean the stigma it used to, except in your own mind. Its part of the culture now which everyone has to face one day.

Losing or leaving your job doesn’t mean that carry the stigma it used to, except in your own mind. It’s a part of the culture now. Everyone believes this or not that everyone has to go through this stage one day.

Game Plan For Jobless Recovery

January 12th, 2010

With many positive sign from US companies and from abroad it is abundantly clear that we are at the beginning of an economic recovery. Though the recession may have ended- officially- this is likely to be jobless recovery. In a jobless recovery profit increases but companies are conservative and don’t hire back those employees which were cut during the recession. Productivity has increased and technology has allowed also for fewer workers.

Executives left with no exception because almost all the job categories have been hit in this recession. If you are one of those manager or executive who has lost her job – or if you are still hanging by your fingernail – you can contemplate your next career move during a jobless recovery because there are many things worth considering.

Stop being stubborn. Because you may not be able to get a job at the companies that meet your career goals and it may be time to start expanding your job search. Look into similar industries, different locations and even the idea of switching career is a better option.

Target those companies that you really prefer, and want to stay on their notice. Be in a better position to get the job because things change and job opens. Relocation could be one of the options. For last many years job seekers have been lucky enough to find jobs in their home town only. But this mindset has to be changed. Looking elsewhere for jobs that meet your skill set and career goals is a better option. At worst, you can come back home when the employment conditions improves. At best, you may enjoy your new job enough to stay.

Start looking for jobs in healthcare, education, government and the environment is a good option because it is expected that there is growth in these industries in the coming years due to a number of factors (i.e. healthcare reform, a push for new green jobs, turnover in government and the creation of new jobs in the industry, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that will pump money into education.)

Going back to home is a good option but this not for everyone. Do not just decide that what you want to become just go straight to school without doing any research. but if you have always wanted to change careers, or go to college or grad school, now may be the best time to do it.

Never shy away from volunteer work, internships and part-time and temp work. Because these route will keep you busy during a recession, but it will also help job seekers add skills to their resumes, make contacts in the industry and offer opportunities for full-time work should openings become available.

We are experiencing a jobless recovery now, but it does not mean that there are no jobs out there. Taping into your network and making the effort to get on front of the right people. The right referral could lead to a job.

Advice On How To Prepare For Executive Job Interviews

December 29th, 2009

Consulting firms generally include case questions in their interviews. In these questions you are asked to think through some “real-world” questions, usually one with which you’re totally unfamiliar! You should approach these to demonstrate your problem solving opportunities. They also try to pressurize you usually through silence or confrontational questions, to see how you react. Answer pleasantly and calmly, ignoring the provocation.

Second interviews involve often a daylong series of discussions with potential supervisors, co-workers and other managers or department heads. In disciplines like education, you may be asked to bring a portfolio or to prepare and deliver a class while being observed by other professionals. Some organizations also administer tests or give tours. The JobConcierge Best Executive Recruiters list is a free list of recruiters and headhunters who help anyone find jobs, including executive jobs and executive level jobs.

Treat each successive interview as if it were your first. Maintain your enthusiasm with each new person you meet. When you arrange the visit, make sure that you understand who will pay for travel arrangements, how they are to be made, and what records you need for reimbursement. A group may interview you. If possible, learn the name and title of each member of the group before the interview. This will allow you to know with what orientation or area of interest each person approaches the meeting. It is best to know this in advance of the interview day. Handle this situation in much the same way as if there were only one interviewer, taking care to direct your answers toward each person in the group.

On-site interviews often include meals. Follow your hosts’ lead, both in ordering and in deciding whether to talk about work-related or casual topics. These meals are part of an evaluative process, whether or not they appear informal. Recognize that you will be visiting a working organization and the people you see may not be able to devote exclusive attention to you. Don’t take it personally if an interviewer takes a call; pick up the thread of the conversation when the interviewer is free again. Second interviews include group interviews in which several applicants for the same position are presented with a problem to solve or subject to discuss as a group. The interviewer merely observe. In this case, keep in mind that you are being evaluated in terms of how you interact with the other members of your group.

Maintain eye contact and return a firm handshake if a hand is extended, close the interview with the same enthusiastic and energetic style with which you approached it. Be aware of signals that indicate that the interview is over. An interviewer may stand or express appreciation for your time. This is your clue to close the interview. Express your enthusiasm for the organization and, if you are interested in the position, ask the interviewer when a decision will be made and when you may call. Send a thank-you note following each interview. For more job search advice and job interview advice, check out the JobConcierge Best Job Search Advice on the Internet. Find Executive Level Jobs Tips: Executive Social Networking Online

December 29th, 2009

From recent graduates to executives who are earning over $100k a top embrace social media and start a proactive job search. The recruiting industry is changing over the past year dynamically; finding candidates via posting ads on the traditional job boards or hiring headhunters is replaced by the method of looking at the candidate’s profile on linkedin or using their own due diligence. If you haven’t made your account on linkedin, twitter, facebook than make it today. In today’s environment you have to upgrade yourself otherwise you will be left behind. As the limited space is given , I’ll skip the basics and take my concerns on personal branding and differentiating your job applications with linkedin.

One way of extending your personal brand is to join and participate in discussions on facebook and linkedin. LinkedIn has Q&A sections and both sites have specialized groups. Participate in discussions leave your signature with your email address at the bottom of your message with the other media information so that people who enjoyed your posts and the web scouring headhunters can add and make connections with you. The only way is the sincerity and consistency. The great way to start is the jobconcierge facebook if you have not started. People quit in frustration people who get success are the ones who give proper time to this on weekly or monthly basis.

The job applications can be differentiated by merging social networking with job application. Job search through job boards is takes a lot of time and is tiring which can be defined as a job itself. Start from the best job boards. It’s a must to do if you really want to be thorough and broaden your chances for your next job. If you find results of your job search than start categorizing them in the categories which are: (1) ideal job or (2) willing to work there. Applying for jobs is a game as much as you applied for as much as you get interviews. People may talk about quality, but reality what I have seen people applying for 100 jobs in a week and consistently getting interviews. The Jobconcierge service helps you as it assigned a HR recruiter for you which search and apply jobs for you accordingly. Search services by executives really works.

The search can be more refined by using the search box which is their in linkedin in right upper hand side. The members within 1st and 2nd degree connections are contacted by the clients , I suggested. You can make a basic ground by joining the same interest groups in which the person is to whom you want to contact and in which there is no basic ground. By messaging people and talking them on phone is the best way to know more about the company what we suggested. The surprising thing is the results that how many people are willing to help. Whether they have any information on the posting can be judged through the conversation if you know anyone in a particular division can bring you a HR contact or you can send your resume directly to HR attached with a suggestion.

Take things one step further and thing strategically now. Two Job concierge members have thanked me for receiving job offers each in past seven days. How did they do it? It’s not by chance. Relevant jobs were founded by their jobconcierge online each week for them. On linkedin for ideal level jobs they reached out and connected with people. Their applications were filled out and submitted by their Jobconcierge for the other level jobs. Job search is itself a job of full-time. Using your time more efficiently and result maximization. Online spending 50 hours in a month and getting is nowhere what is done by an average job-seeker. Taking things one step further can be done by classifying jobs you find online, starting a proactive job search and reaching out to various connections on LinkedIn. What you get will really surprise you .

Where Are You On The Subject Of Social Work Agencies

December 3rd, 2009

When I went to law school the politically conservative students called me the social worker because of my relative conservative beliefs. They would mutter from the back of the class when I was discussing a legal case I thought would be better decided by society rather than the strict rule of law that I should become a lawyer for social work agencies.

I am not a liberal. I was not one in law school and I am not one now. But from my studies I can see how those who promote justice based on societal and environmental factors think and believe. I studied sociology as an undergrad and it was my minor to my major of political science.

If you want to know what conservatives think of when they think of social workers, go back to some of the films of the fifty’s and sixties. Remember the movie with Marlon Brando who rides around on his motorcycle disrupting the normal way of life of each town he passes through. There is always a young attractive woman who knows the rebel is simply misunderstood by the rest of society. In fact society is why he is a rebel. Society has made him this way. And she is going to help him overcome all the wrong and injustice society has done to the rebel.

People with conservative views towards politics and society argue that it is not society who is fault if someone is not living a proper life. Conservatives argue that everyone has responsibility for their own actions. If you break the law, if you end up out of work, if you do not have an education, then it is your fault not society’s fault.

But the social worker, or at least those with degrees in sociology will say that a person who is raised for instance in the ghetto in a one parent family living in a neighborhood filled with illegal activity like illegal drug dealing, illegal gambling, and prostitution has many disadvantages compared to a person raised in an upper class family with two parents living in a nice home on a street unfamiliar to crime.

I worked the ghetto as a sales representative. I worked the rich side of town as a sales representative. Guess where I would choose to grow up or raise a family. Listen no matter how driven a child is, no matter how smart a child is, growing up in the ghetto is not easy compared to growing up in an upper class area with two parents.

This is not to say that those who decide to forget school and join the ranks of the drug dealers or other law breakers do not have personal responsibility for their acts, they do. But social workers do not need conservatives calling them bleeding heart liberals.

No there are many young people living in a jungle of crime, destruction, and disillusion who want to get out. Some do not need to hear about how their environment is responsible for the continuing social problems passed down from one generation to the next. No they simply need help to get themselves out of the ghetto. And that is where social work agencies can help.
